History

The Torabhaig Distillery was founded in 2017, marking a significant revival of whisky production on the Isle of Skye, which has a rich history in the craft dating back centuries. The distillery aims to produce fine single malt Scotch that encapsulates the character of Skye—rugged, natural, and deeply influenced by the geography and climate of the area. The Sound of Sleat symbolizes this journey, aiming to deliver a whisky that will evolve over time, ultimately leading to a mature 10-year-old expression. As part of the Legacy Series, each release not only highlights the craftsmanship of Torabhaig but also pays homage to the spirits of the region, blending tradition with modern innovation.

Fabrication Process

The production of Torabhaig Sound of Sleat is rooted in traditional whisky-making practices, beginning with the selection of high-quality ingredients. Barley, sourced specifically for its suitability in whisky, is malted before being mashed and fermented with carefully cultivated yeast strains to capture the distinct character of the spirit. The wash is then distilled twice in bespoke copper pot stills, where the nature of the stills contributes to the complex flavor profile. Following distillation, the spirit is meticulously matured in a combination of first-fill American oak (Quercus Alba) casks and ex-bourbon casks. This maturation process lasts between 5 and 6 years, allowing the whisky to develop its rich character while drawing flavors from the oak and the maritime environment. Bottling occurs at 46% ABV, ensuring the expression presents itself with both strength and elegance, reflective of the distillery's ethos and commitment to quality.
