Stewart, who has been with The Balvenie for over 50 years, brought his extensive knowledge and experience to bear in crafting this exceptional whisky. Named after the distinctive marrying vessel known as the Tun, where the whisky from numerous casks is blended, the Tun 1509 aims to encapsulate the essence of The Balvenie's heritage while introducing new variations with each batch. The process of blending different casks demonstrates the artistry involved in whisky-making, allowing each batch to tell its own story while maintaining the hallmarks of the distillery's renowned quality.

Fabrication Process

The production of The Balvenie Tun 1509 begins with traditional malting techniques where barley is sourced and soaked in water before being allowed to germinate. After germination, the barley is dried in a kiln, stopping the process. The dried barley is then milled into grist and mixed with hot water in large vessels to extract fermentable sugars. Yeast is introduced to the wort, initiating fermentation and producing a low-alcohol wash. This wash is then distilled twice in copper pot stills, yielding a spirit of higher alcohol content. Following distillation, the spirit is aged in a variety of carefully selected casks, primarily first-fill bourbon and sherry casks, for a specified minimum of 8 years. After aging, the whisky is meticulously blended from different casks and allowed to mingle in the Tun for three months before bottling, resulting in a complex flavor profile.
