History

Ardbeg Distillery, founded in 1815 by John Macdougall, is situated on Islay—a region renowned for its history of producing peated whiskies. Corryvreckan was conceived as a tribute to the distillery's commitment to crafting bold and intense spirits. This particular expression was introduced in the early 2000s, filling the shoes of the beloved Airigh nam Beist. The name 'Corryvreckan' was chosen to invoke the dynamic, swirling waters of the Corryvreckan whirlpool, symbolizing the whisky’s vibrant and turbulent flavor profile. In 2010, it was awarded The World's Best Single Malt at the World Whiskies Awards, solidifying its status in the whisky community and further enhancing Ardbeg's prestigious reputation.

Fabrication Process

The production of Ardbeg Corryvreckan begins with selecting high-quality barley, which is malted and dried over peat fires, infusing the grain with the quintessential Islay character. The malt is then ground into a coarse flour before being mixed with warm water in a process known as mashing, which helps extract fermentable sugars. Following this, the wort is transferred to fermentation vessels, where natural yeast is introduced, generating alcohol through fermentation over several days. The distilled spirit is then placed into a combination of American Oak and French Oak casks for aging, where it develops its distinctive flavors and rich character over time. It is then bottled at a non-chill filtered strength, preserving its natural oils and flavors.
