History

St. George Spirits was established by Jörg Rupf in 1982. Rupf, who was inspired by his European heritage and the art of distilling fruit-based spirits, created St. George in a time when the craft distilling movement was virtually non-existent in the United States. The distillery began its journey in a small space in Alameda, focusing on traditional eau de vie production, a nod to the Old World distillation techniques he admired. Throughout the years, St. George Spirits has evolved significantly, both in scale and product range. Initially producing a limited selection of fruit brandies, the distillery expanded its offerings in the 1990s with the introduction of several innovative gins and the highly regarded single malt whiskeys. Milestones in their history include the launch of their signature gins, Botanivore and Terroir, and the development of their whiskeys, which have received numerous awards and industry recognition. In 2022, St. George celebrated its 40th anniversary, marking a legacy steeped in innovation and craftsmanship within the beverage industry. This period also saw the distillery move into a much larger venue—a former Navy hangar—where they invested in state-of-the-art distillation equipment, enhancing their production capacity while maintaining their artisanal approach. The hangar's size allows them to experiment with new spirit formulations and distillation techniques, solidifying their role in shaping the craft distilling landscape.
