Port Ellen distillery was founded in 1825 by Walter Frederick Campbell, a visionary who also played a significant role in establishing the town of Port Ellen. Originally named after Campbell's wife, the distillery was strategically located to take advantage of the deep-water harbor, which facilitated the shipping of whisky to broader markets. Over the years, Port Ellen became known for its distinctive and richly flavored single malts, characterized by their heavy peat influence and robust maritime qualities.
