Port Charlotte was founded in 2001, resurrecting a historic distillery that originally operated from 1829 to 1929. This revival came under the direction of the Bruichladdich Distillery, which sought to honor the long-lost reputation of Port Charlotte whisky while introducing modern distillation practices. The distillery established itself quickly, with its first whisky released in 2004. From its inception, Port Charlotte concentrated on the identity of heavily peated Scotch, reminiscent of traditional Islay whiskies.
