Introduction
Lerwick Distillery, situated in the heart of Lerwick, is poised to become a significant player in the world of whisky as Shetland's first dedicated whisky distillery. Founded by local entrepreneurs Martin Watt and Calum Miller, the distillery is designed as an artisan establishment that emphasizes quality and craftsmanship. It aims to create exceptional single malt Scotch whisky that is reflective of Shetland's unique heritage and geographical characteristics. This dedication to quality aligns with their ethos of producing spirits that not only satisfy the palate but also tell a story of their origins. The distillery's offerings will include a variety of single malt whiskies, crafted with locally sourced ingredients and inspired by Shetland’s rich history and landscape. The production process will utilize Rock Spring water from the nearby natural aquifers, known for its purity and unique mineral content, which is believed to enhance the flavors in the whisky. The master distiller, Ian Millar, brings a wealth of experience and has a vision for creating whisky that captures the essence of Shetland, aiming to establish a new benchmark for Scottish distilling. As Lerwick Distillery near completion, it has already begun to create a buzz in the craft spirits community, and there are plans to host tasting sessions as soon as production begins in 2024. Although the distillery is yet to officially launch its products, the anticipation is building, and it is expected to garner attention for its innovative recipes and commitment to artisan techniques. Lerwick Distillery is set to make its mark as both a local treasure and an international attraction for whisky connoisseurs.
