Kilbeggan Co. Distillery

Kilbeggan Co. Distillery was founded by Matthias McManus in 1757. As Ireland's first licensed distillery, it emerged during a time when whiskey production was becoming increasingly popular across the country. The establishment of Kilbeggan was motivated by a deep-seated passion for whiskey making and the desire to share high-quality spirits with the public. Over the years, the distillery has seen numerous changes and expansions, with the original stills holding a capacity of approximately 1,000 liters. In 1891, the distillery adopted the name Locke’s Distillery, after the then-owner, J.J. Locke. This period marked significant growth for the distillery, with innovations in production and an expanded range of products. However, like many distilleries, Kilbeggan faced challenges throughout the 20th century, including economic downturns and Prohibition in the United States, which severely impacted the global whiskey market. In the 1950s and 1960s, the distillery struggled to maintain operations and eventually ceased production temporarily. In 1989, the distillery returned to its roots and was lovingly restored to its former glory, marking a renaissance for Kilbeggan. Today, it operates under the umbrella of Suntory Global Spirits and continues to craft quality Irish whiskey, while also serving as a visitor center for those interested in the history of whiskey making in Ireland.
