Green River Distilling was founded by JW McCulloch in 1885 with the intention of producing quality whiskey that would reflect the local heritage of Owensboro, Kentucky. During its early years, the distillery gained a formidable reputation for its high-quality spirits. However, like many establishments of its time, it faced challenges during Prohibition, which forced it to halt production. After the repeal of Prohibition, the distillery struggled to regain its footing but managed to re-establish itself over the decades.
