Cocktail

Zombie

The Zombie is a legendary tiki cocktail, celebrated for its potent combination of rums, tropical fruit juices, and exotic flavors. Traditionally made with a blend of light, dark, and overproof rums, along with lime juice, pineapple juice, papaya or passion fruit syrup, grenadine, and a hint of bitters, it delivers a complex, fruity, and intensely flavorful experience. Known for its strength as much as its taste, the Zombie has become a symbol of tiki culture and adventurous drinking. The cocktail was created in the 1930s by Donn Beach, also known as Don the Beachcomber, a pioneer of tiki bars in California. The Zombie was designed to pack a punch—so much so that it was reportedly limited to two per customer at Beachcomber’s bars. Its recipe combined multiple rums and fresh tropical ingredients to mask the high alcohol content while creating a balanced, delicious cocktail. The name “Zombie” evokes the potent, almost hypnotic effect of the drink, aligning perfectly with the playful and theatrical elements of tiki culture. Traditionally served in a tall glass or tiki mug over crushed ice, the Zombie is often garnished with tropical fruits, mint, or an overproof rum float. The presentation is as striking as the cocktail itself, reinforcing its image as a dramatic, exotic beverage. Each sip combines layers of sweetness, acidity, spice, and rum warmth, creating a multidimensional tropical experience. Today, the Zombie remains a quintessential tiki cocktail, celebrated in bars worldwide for its complexity, creativity, and legendary strength. Its enduring appeal lies in its ability to transport drinkers to a tropical paradise while offering an adventurous, flavorful, and unforgettable cocktail experience.
