Mariposa Negra Cocktail Bar

Mariposa Negra Cocktail Bar is one of the most unusual and concept driven cocktail bars to emerge from Barcelona’s modern bar scene. Located in the lively Born district, the bar opened in 2023 and quickly captured attention for its theatrical atmosphere and deeply artistic approach to cocktails. The project was created by Italian bartender Luca Corradini, formerly associated with the historic American Bar at The Savoy in London, together with entrepreneur José Carlos Infante. Their idea was to build a bar where storytelling, craftsmanship, and mixology would merge into a single immersive environment. The concept of the bar is inspired by the novel Marina by Spanish writer Carlos Ruiz Zafón. The story, set in Barcelona during the 1970s, tells of a mysterious scientist who creates a serum extracted from black butterflies capable of bringing strange creatures to life. The creators of the bar used this fictional universe as the foundation for its design, transforming the interior into a dark workshop that feels like it belongs inside the novel itself. Inside, the atmosphere is intentionally mysterious and theatrical. Recycled wood and metal are combined with handmade sculptures, unusual lighting, and decorative elements that resemble fantastical creatures. Much of the furniture, décor, and even the vessels used to serve cocktails are created inside the bar’s own workshop. Techniques such as ceramic molding, laser work, and even 3D printing are used to produce custom glassware and artistic objects that give each drink its own visual identity. The cocktail program reflects the same experimental spirit. Drinks are crafted using house made ingredients, infusions, and liqueurs, often presented in unique ceramic cups designed specifically for each recipe. The menu features imaginative signature creations such as Purple Rambla, a complex combination of gin, citrus, elderflower liqueur, pineapple brine, radish, red cabbage, and fresh orange juice. Another notable drink is Pesadilla en Sarrià, which blends rum with a house coffee liqueur, mint, oats, banana, and herbs. Despite being relatively new, the bar quickly gained international attention. Only a few months after opening, it was recognized by Time Out International as one of the coolest bars in the world, ranking fifth on their global list. The recognition highlighted the venue’s unusual concept and the craftsmanship behind both its cocktails and artistic design. Visiting Mariposa Negra feels less like entering a typical cocktail bar and more like stepping into a dark, imaginative laboratory hidden within Barcelona’s historic streets. Surrounded by the art galleries, restaurants, and nightlife of the Born district, the bar offers an experience where every detail, from the décor to the glassware, contributes to a world of fantasy, creativity, and carefully crafted drinks.
